Bunge has picked nine members who will represent Tanzania in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) for the next five years following hotly contested elections held earlier this week. Those elected included four women and two candidates from opposition parties. A former journalist with the 'Daily News' and 'Sunday News' and a public relations practitioner, Ms Shy-Rose Bhanji, former Dar es Salaam Mayor Adam Omar Kimbisa and son of the Father of the Nation, Mr Charles Makongoro Nyerere, all from CCM, are among those elected.
Others are Ms Angela Charles Kizigha (CCM), Ms Maryam Yahya Ussi (CCM), Mr Abdullah Ali Hassan Mwinyi (CCM), Ms Nderakindo Perpetua Kessy (NCCR-Mageuzi), Mr Twaha Issa Taslima (CUF) and Mr Bernard Musomi Murunya (CCM). A total of 305 votes were cast, representing 87 per cent of all MPs while 19 votes were spoilt. Ms Bhanji got 120 votes, Mr Kimbisa (210), Mr Nyerere (123), Ms Kizigha (166), Ms Ussi (91), Mr Mwinyi (227), Ms Kessy (113), Mr Taslima (175) and Mr Murunya (135).
Women Category's candidates were Ms Angela Charles Kizigha, Ms Fancy Nkuhi, Ms Godbertha Kokubanza Kinyondo, Ms Janet Deo Mmari, Ms Janet Zebedayo Mbene, Ms Maryam Ussi Yahya, Ms Sebtuu Mohamed Nassor, Ms Shy-Rose Sadruddin Bhanji , Ms Sofia Ali Rijaal, all from CCM and Ms Rose Daudi Mwalusamba from CUF. In the Zanzibar Category were Mr Abdullah Ali Hassan Mwinyi, Mr Ahmada Hamad Khatib, Dr Haji Mwita Haji, Mr Khamis Jabir Makame, Dr Said Gharib Bilal, and Mr Zubeir Ali Maulid, all from CCM.
Nominees from the Opposition included Mr Anthony Calist Komu (Chadema), Dr Fortunatus Lwanyantika Masha (UDP), Mr Juju Martin Danda (NCCRMageuzi), Mr Micah Elifuraha Mrindoko (TLP), Mr Mwaiseje Polisya (NCCR-Mageuzi), Ms Nderakindo Perpetua Kessy (NCCR-Mageuzi) and Mr Twaha Issa Taslima (CUF). Candidates in the Tanzania Mainland Category were Mr Adam Omar Kimbisa, Mr Bernard Musomi Murunya, Mr Charles Makongoro Nyerere, Dr Edmund Bernard Mndolwa, Mr Elibariki Immanuel Kingu, Mr Evans Mujuni Rweikiza, Mr Mrisho Mashaka Gambo, Mr Siraju Juma Kaboyonga, Mr William John Malecela, all from CCM and Mr John Dunstan Lifa Chipaka (TADEA). All 33 candidates were given three minutes to explain their agenda before the House and were also to be asked three questions from the floor before asking for the votes.
