The Vice President of the
United Republic of Tanzania Dr. Mohammed Gharib Bilal, has urged the Developed
countries to ensure that there is sustainable financial support to developing
countries to enable them to combat climate change.
Opening a three day workshop
on United Nations Framework Convention on Climate change (UNFCCC), based
approaches for adaption for climate change in Dar es Salaam today, Dr. Bilal said, the fund should provide a
significant source of long term finance and funding for adaptation to support
vulnerable poor countries.
“Green climate fund will be
instrument in providing the financial resources needed to enable action in both
developing and least developed countries to adapt the impacts of climate change
as well as participate in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions” said the Vice
President.
Dr. Bilal told the workshop
participants that, the negative impacts of climate change are obviously seen in
many countries such as loss of wildlife habitat, increased risk of bush fires,
and limited availability of forest products and the situation seems to be worse
as the days goes on.
The Vice President added that,
in the recent study conducted in Tanzania it shows that, there is an increase
of temperature for past 30 years from 0.2 to 0.6 Centigrade which have resulted
into low productivity of farm products and accelerated coastal erosion.
The workshop comprises of 90
participants from United Nations, framework convention on climate change who
will share thoughts, views and experiences on how to combat climate change.
